Dosage

Alimta is prescribed for treatment of non-small cell lung cancer if therapy with other cancer drugs was not successful. The medicine affects growth and spread of cancer cells in the body. Alimta is slowly injected into a vein during 10 minutes. You will usually receive an injection one time every 3 weeks. Before you start getting injections, provide the Doctor with your medical history. To prevent some side effects, you will be prescribed folic acid supplements and vitamin B12 injections. Alimta can decrease amount of blood cells that help your body resist infections and facilitate coagulation. Your blood will be regularly analyzed and your treatment will depend on the results of the testing. Avoid contacting sick or infectious people and be careful using sharp objects.

Precautions

Pregnant and breastfeeding women should not use the drug. Use contraceptives and condoms during the whole course of treatment. Alimta can pass into body fluids. For at least 2 days after you get an injection, prevent your body fluids contact your hands or other surfaces. People who however handle the body fluids should wear rubber gloves. Hands should be washed before and after removing the gloves. Wash contaminated cloths and bedding separately from other laundry. A pregnant woman should not handle body fluids at all. You need an immediate medical attention if you notice any of these signs of an allergic reaction to the drug: heavy breathing and swelling of your face, tongue, lips or throat. Contact your medical advisor in case of the side effects listed below: indigestion, low blood cell counts, fatigue, appetite loss, rash, symptoms of flu, easy bruising, hemorrhage, low urinating, rapid heart, swelling or rapid gain of weight, pale skin, redness or sores in the mouth, throat, on the lips. It is strongly recommended to consult your doctor before usage. Self-treatment is prohibited.
